Firefighter Injured While Battling House Fire

The house fire on Logan Street was called in by neighbors around 3 a.m. this morning.

23-year-old Probationary Firefighter Dominic DeRose received burns and other injuries while operating as the nozzle firefighter on Engine 56. First arriving crews were met with heavy fire and high heat conditions as they fought their way through the front door.

DeRose was wearing all of his protective clothing and equipment when he sustained the injuries.

DeRose, a Sacramento Firefighter since November, 2016, has been admitted to the Burn Unit at UC Davis. Family and coworkers are with him and he said to be in good spirits.

Neighbors told the fire department that the house was abandoned. However, fire investigators say it looks like someone might have been staying there. Next door neighbors were evacuated as a safety precaution. Once the fire was contained they were allowed back in their home.

There were no other injuries, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
