CA Lawmakers Challenge "Ronald Reagan Day" Declaration

Several members of the State Assembly's Democratic majority on Monday stood in support of Republican Dante Acosta's resolution for Ronald Reagan Day, including freshman Monique Limon of Santa Barbara.  She reminded members that Reagan had a different approach to immigration policy.

"Reagan said 'I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and live here, even though some time back they may have entered here illegally,'" said Limon.

On the other hand, Democrat Lorena Gonzalez-Fletcher of San Diego County told the Assembly she does not see the same greatness in Reagan as so many of her colleagues.  She said he did not do enough for issues like AIDS research or South Africa's anti-apartheid movement.

In 1991, the former President Reagan spoke before the California Legislature on the day Governor Pete Wilson had declared "Ronald Reagan Day."
