59-year-old Jim Amormino lives in Anaheim. He was inside his home on Wednesday when he looked out his backdoor and saw a man starting to walk away with two cockatiels that live in the backyard.

"Hey, where are you going with my birds?" Amormino says he asked the man. "He placed them down, pulled out a gun, and I started to run inside."

The gunman kicked down the backdoor and Amormino retreated to the bathroom with his granddaughters. The gunman grabbed some electronics and the family dog before bolting out the door.

"I thought it was my last" says Amormino.

The dog, which Amormino says is like family, was found a few hours later by the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
