US troops and Afghan officials were surprised last week when a mid-level Taliban commander in Paktika province turned himself in and tried to collect the reward offered for his capture.

“Be on the Lookout” posters of Mohammad Ashan had been plastered all over the area after he was suspected of plotting at least two attacks on Afghan security forces. Officials say that they usually don't get much response from the posters because the residents are afraid to pass on intelligence that might lead to an arrest.

Ashan walked up to a police checkpoint and was arrested on the spot. His identity was confirmed through a biometric scan.

The reward offered for his capture: $100. He was not given any money.
