We all know the feeling, you wake up at 6AM with that scratchiness in the back of your throat and know by tomorrow morning you're going to be sick. So how do you beat that cold before it gets started? We asked Dr. Stuart Cohen with UC Davis and Dr. Maxine Barish-Wreden with Sutter Health that question and have put together this get-well guide to stopping a cold in its tracks:
- Skip work if you can. Staying at home and resting will help to reduce any symptoms that may develop over the next 24 hours.
- Start on the fluids right away. Drink plenty of water, juice or tea and keep that cup refilled all day long.
- Eat right. Lunch should be chicken soup. For dinner, try something that's protein rich like meat or fish, throw in a side of rice and plenty of veggies as well. After you eat, remember to gargle with salt water, it will wash away any bacteria that's built up.
- If you're used to it, try some light excercise. Working out is an immune system booster, but just remember to keep your heart rate low. Taxing yourself will only do you more harm.
- Finally, take a hot shower before bed to clear those nasal passages, and go to sleep early! You need all the rest you can get if you plan on waking up symptom free tomorrow morning!
