Maybe it's the economy. Maybe we're just too trusting. Everywhere you look these days it seems people who are entrusted with OPM--Other Peoples Money are allegedly helping themselves to it. Most of the time, it starts small----a little "loan" to may some household expense. Intended to be re paid. But then things get out of control. Democratic politicians including Senator Diane Feinstein have been victimized by a long time campaign treasurer Kinde Durkee, who admits to misappropriating 7 million dollars.
The numbers are smaller in tiny Dixon Illinois, where the village treasurer is thought to have funneled some $30,000 for her personal use...about 4 years worth Dixon's annual spending allocation:
