One of the first things I do when arrive at KFBK each morning is check my email. Because of my hours, it’s the main form of communication with my bosses, our sales people, listeners who liked something we did - or felt a need to scold me in cyberspace for something they heard.

It’s also a repository for a lot of junk. Wacky story ideas from desperate publicists, rantings from outraged citizens, even the occasional invitation to help share the jackpot in the Nigerian lottery, if I could just tide the winner over with a 10,000 dollar check, until he or she gets the big money. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to verbally harass a couple of city council members who voted no on a new arena plan, apparently because the old folks in their district might not follow the Kings or go to as many tractor pulls and WWF Smack-downs as you might think. Never mind that unlike the current system at Sleep Train Arena, the city would get a big piece of the gate, parking concessions, and the predicted array of restaurants, bars, clubs, and shopping that would boost the city’s tax base and really make Sacramento - downtown Sacramento – fun. That’s probably the word that did in the votes of Kevin Mc Carty and Rob Fong - two guys  who feel great about banning plastic bags and taxing soda pop but aren’t quite as visionary when it comes to commerce in the city that employs them. But enough politics…

But every once in a while somebody sends me something that I just have to pass on…. This time I’m not just going to email it to a few friends. I want to share it with you as well.

It comes from my friend Tom a well known Sacramentan who probably would prefer I didn’t use his last name. It’s the results of a survey of a bunch of kids who ranged in age from 4 to 8. They were asked the question, “what does love mean?” From 5-year-old Elaine:

Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.

7-year-old Danny was on the same wave length:

“Love is when Mommy makes coffee for my Daddy and takes a sip to make sure the taste is ok.”

From Bobby, also 7 “Love is what’s in the room on Christmas after you open all the presents.”

8-year-old Rebecca sees it this way…

“When my Granny got arthritis she couldn’t bend over to paint her toe nails. So my grandpa does it for her even though he has arthritis. That’s love.”

5-year-old Karl may be onto something. He says love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.

7-year-old Noelle says love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt and then he wears it every day…

Karen is also 7 and says you can tell someone’s in love if their eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of their mouth

4-year-old Billy says it’s easy to learn if somebody loves you: “When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.”

And here’s the best from the mouth of babes: it comes from 6-year-old Nikka who says “If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate.”

Smart girl.
