We still vote in this country---in most of the U.S. We select the men and women to represent us in government at every level, from local municipal and city councils, to state assemblies and senates, to governors, U.S. representatives, senators and of course, president.

In theory, those votes got to people who are supposed to represent us. Maybe not all of our views, but some of them. But sometimes you feel like your vote is just a wasted political exercise. I for example, did not vote for our incumbent president, though technically he still represents me and you and everyone else. But sometimes he doesn’t act very presidential. The U.S. General Assembly is convening in New York this week. This amounts to an international convention of world leaders. Tradition has it that the leader’s hob nob meeting to pitch ideas and exchange views even if they don’t see eye to eye. This year, President Obama will travel to New York to deliver a speech, which, as described, seems to be aimed more at the domestic audience than the international delegation. But while in New York, he will break with tradition. The president isn’t scheduled to talk to any foreign leader. He will take time to appear on ABC’s mid-day chick fest known as The View, where the liberal hostesses will fawn over the leader of the free world and likely fail to discuss anything substantive. Downtown, the heat continues to fly at NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg who has signed off on a decision to give teen girls morning after pills to prevent pregnancy. It’s unclear how dedicated school officials will be about obtaining parental notification or permission. And back in Washington, school children are grousing about the new healthy meals being ordered by the first lady and Food Czar in Chief Michell Obama. And here in California, the governor has signed a bill allowing nurse practitioners and midwives to abort unborn children.

What do you suppose the Washingtons, Franklins, Hamiltons, Adams and Hancocks would have to say about this?

Probably something along the lines of it seemed like a good idea at the time….
