Today is the 50th anniversary of the court case that guaranteed a lawyer to anyone accused of a crime. Florida mechanic Clarence Earl Gideon was convicted of burglary in 1963.
He appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, saying his right to liberty was denied when he was refused an attorney. The Court unanimously agreed with him. CBS Sunday Morning looked back at how the court case came about:
