CALIFORNIA- Shark fin soup is off the menu in the Golden State. A statewide ban on the sale, possession, trade or distribution of shark fins goes into effect today. Anyone found violating the ban could face a penalty up to six months of jail time, as well as a $1,000 fine.
Supporters of the ban say the populations of some shark species have been reduced by as much as 90%. The purpose of the provisions of the Shark Conservation Act of 2010 (SCA) is to prohibit removal of shark fins at sea.
