A Marine veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars has taken up self-imposed duty in front of a central California elementary school in the wake of the Connecticut shooting. Sergeant Craig Pusley stood all day on Wednesday in fatigues in front of the flag pole at Hughson Elementary School, just southeast of Modesto. He was not armed. He served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan before leaving active duty last year.

He says he wanted to be sure all children could go home safe for Christmas. He is the father of a 3-year-old and his wife is expecting another child. He says when he enlisted, he swore to defend this country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Principal Laura Fong says Pusley will be back today, the school's last day before the holiday break.
