While President Obama is likely to win California’s electoral votes next month, a number of congressional races could be decided by a relatively small - but substantial - voting bloc. America’s newest citizens, those who naturalized since the turn of the century, make up six percent of the nationwide electorate. That percentage is even higher (9 percent) in the Golden State.

They could play a significant role in a number of state races. As first-generation citizens historically lean Democratic and register at lower rates, Republican Party candidates and activists have been targeting the demographic.
