It’s been said you never get a second chance to make a first impression…there is something to it. The first time I encountered Jerry Brown, covering his doomed 1992 bid for the White House, I thought this is a man whose brain has been taken over by aliens. Not sure much has changed. Brown is to politics what cockroaches are to the insect hierarcy…he is a survivor…who will do anything to stay in the political business, heading the state democratic party, running the city of Oakland…and then with a lot of help from his union pals…returning to govern the Golden State for a third term in 2010. Consider this---Jerry Brown was first elected to run our state..before a good chunk of his current constituency was born…He was 37 one of the youngest governors ever…if as expected he runs and wins a 4th term…he’ll be 80 when it ends…and the oldest in office.
Contrary to his political survival instincts, Jerry Brown is not a man who changes with the times. In his first go round he was faced with a serious drought….his answer then as it seems to be now..carrying on the family tradition passed down from his late father…just take as much water as possible from the North----do an end run around the lucrative farmland of the central state---and head the h20 south…while mumbling that Governors can’t make it rain..And in the jet age...he sees a train as a transit panacea.
And while he can appear to be stubbornly independent..a closer look suggests the unions who bought the time that got Brown the votes in 2010…are clearly pulling the strings…
Brown didn’t have a lot to do with it…the economic pendulum swung back, the tax base increased..and now California has a budget surplus…The Gov’s taking credit..and his backers say file it under leadership…well consider this…a fresh survey of California voters and their priorities…put Brown’s priorities…way down on the list..stronger gun laws…a Brown must…and dead last..High Speed rail..Brown wants to spend 68 billion dollars on that…even under his stewardship…California ranks 46th in educating it’s students…46 th when it comes to job growth…dead last in attracting new business and number one…when it comes to poverty… What Brown can do for you..how about retire.
