Thousands of Nevada County Residents Evacuated Due to Jones Fire

Evacuation orders have expanded for day three of the Jones Fire in rural Nevada County.

The fire, which started Monday at 3 a.m., started due to lightning off of Jones Bar Road, near Nevada City.

As many as 4,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate. 675 acres have burned and it is only 5% contained, as of Wednesday morning. Four houses and many outbuildings were destroyed in the fire, according to the sheriff's office.

An evacuation center at Ready Springs School in Penn Valley has been set up. Additional evacuation points have also been established at Cottage Hill School in Grass Valley and Alder Creek Middle School in Truckee.
