Tips To Keep Children Safe At School

The most recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida is the 17th school shooting in America since the year began 7 weeks ago, and it's left some parents and students feeling helpless and exposed in what's supposed to be a safe learning environment.

Since September 11th, we've often been encouraged that if we see something, we should say something, but sometimes it's not as easy as that. It's a very hard subject to talk about, but if the stories your kids bring home cross a line for you, you should consider reporting those stories or your fears to the right authorities.

Some schools here in Sacramento offer anonymous tip lines to report suspicious behavior, and the Sacramento Police Department has a a similar feature.

This handout from a Sheriff's Department in Texas outlines some ways students, parents and teachers can all take steps toward keeping schools safe.

But, most importantly, remember to trust your instincts.
