A 72-year-old San Francisco man is back home, after spending nearly three weeks lost in a Northern California forest.
Gene Penaflor was separated from his partner while deer hunting on Sept. 24. Penaflor tried walking out of the Mendocino National Forest but he became disoriented, lost, and then fell and was knocked unconscious.
A group of hunters heard him calling for help Saturday morning, made a stretcher from small trees and their coats and carried him for several hours before meeting up with rescuers. He was helicoptered to a hospital in Ukiah, where doctors found him in remarkably good health.
Penaflor stayed alive by eating algae, a snake and three squirrels.
