Since 2011 the average number monthly complaints from consumers who signed up for that list but are still getting telemarketing calls have jumped sixty three percent and just last year in California there were 428,000 of them. The Federal Trade Commission says technology is to blame. Tech-savvy telemarketers are sending out thousands of computerized messages at once, and when authorities try to track them investigations often lead to offshore call centers or even just fake numbers.
The issue is a work in progress that we may just have to deal with. Most of the calls that make it through these days are for things like extended auto warranties or enrollment in debt-reduction programs.
