A new arena coalition makes its debut today, complete with a dedicated website. Voters For a Fair Arena Deal want an arena, but they don't want Sacramento mortgaging away its future to get the deal done.
The immediate goal of "Voters for a Fair Arena Deal" is to help get the STOP initiative letting the voters decide whether to use public money on the ballot. After that, the group wants the current deal to build an arena renegotiated.
Attorney Craig Powell is a member of the coalition. He wants the arena to be built, he's just worried that the plan hasn't been thought through.
Powell says he wants, "An alternate plan, a smart plan, a less expensive plan for city taxpayers, a less risky plan for building the arena,"
He says the arena deal must protect the city's ability to provide services in the future without having crushing debt payments hanging over its head, draining the general fund.
The coalition is looking to get away from the all-or-nothing camps dominating the scene by focusing on getting Sacramento the best deal financially for a new arena.
