A local American Indian tribe is making history with the minimum wage.
The Jackson Rancheria Band of Miwuk Indians is announcing they plan to increase the minimum wage on the reservation to $10.60 an hour on Jan. 1 of the coming year.
That will be the highest minimum wage rate of any state, local or other tribal government.
This announcement coming just weeks after the California Legislature and the governor approved an increase in the state mandated minimum wage from $8 to $10 per hour by the 2016.
Because Jackson Rancheria is a sovereign government, it doesn't have to comply with the state minimum wage law.
