SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The next mystery in the ongoing saga about whether voters should have a say in how the new Kings arena is financed is: Where have all the petition signatures gone?
John Hyde with Sacramento Taxpayers Opposed to Pork, or STOP, won't say where all the petition signatures are right now.
"As for the status on them, I'm afraid I can't provide a comment on that," Hyde said.
Seattle businessman Chris Hansen donated $80,000 toward the effort to put the arena funding measure before Sacramento voters. Hansen lost his bid to move the Kings to Seattle earlier this year, and was criticized for his involvement in the petition drive.
Meanwhile, Hyde says they're still hoping to be able to use those signatures.
"These people have expressed their desire to vote on the issue. And we certainly honor their desire to have their votes count," he said.
The group needs to collect and submit 22,000 valid signatures by December for the issue to be on the ballot.
