TUOLUMNE COUNTY -- As the Rim Fire continues to expand, more and more people are taking shelter at the Sonora Fairgrounds.
The American Red Cross is seeing a dramatic increase in those using the shelter.
"What started as accommodating 12 to 15 individuals those first couple nights, did rise to 58 occupants as of last night," American Red Cross spokesman Jordan Scott said.
Scott encourages those who live in the area to gather any necessary items on the chance they'll be asked to evacuate.
"What we've seen, especially with the Rim Fire is just a rapid spread and that things can change -- in a hurry," Scott said.
A 3-day supply of water and non-perishable food is encouraged, along with medications, a flashlight and your cell phone -- and, don't forget the charger.
