UPDATE: Friday, 4 p.m.
SACRAMENTO -- The man arrested in the murder of Jessica Funk-Haslam almost a year-and-a-half ago made his first appearance in court this afternoon.
With hands and feet shackled, 23-year old Ryan Roberts appeared before Judge Gary E. Ransom this afternoon to face an open murder charge
Roberts said, "Yes" when asked if he understood the charges and "Yes, sir" when asked if he wanted the court to appoint him a lawyer.
However, the public defender excused himself from the case on an unidentified conflict of interest so a private attorney will be appointed by the court in time for the next hearing, scheduled for Aug. 16, at 8:30am.
Jessica Funk-Haslam's mother was in attendance and she quickly declined media requests, but did confirm that she was happy with the arrest, she said.
